Read the how-toFour common problems, by the AAO.
| Problem | What helps | Call your orthodontist about |
|---|---|---|
| It smells, even after cleaning | A stronger or more frequent deep clean: a cleaning tablet or a baking soda paste AAO | Odors that persist after several cleaning methods |
| Stains or yellowing | A 15 to 20 minute soak in one part hydrogen peroxide to water, or a baking soda paste AAO | Discoloration that persists the same way |
| The case smells | Replace a case that is cracked, worn, or smells even after cleaning AAO | Nothing: a new case is the fix |
| It feels warped or tight | Lukewarm water only: "If the water feels too hot on your skin, it's too hot for your retainer." AAO | Cracks, loose wires or a fit that feels off: stop wearing it |

How-toA rinse, a brush, and the maker's soak.
ExplainerWhat the aligner makers' guidance says.
How-toThe AAO describes a rinse under lukewarm water as soon as it comes out, a brush every day with a dedicated toothbrush and dish soap, and a soak in a cleaning tablet or solution once a week for 10 to 20 minutes.
The AAO's retainer-care guide does not cover vinegar, so ask your orthodontist before you try it. The same guide describes a 15 to 20 minute soak in hydrogen peroxide diluted with water for stains.
The AAO says no alcohol-based mouthwash and no long soaks in regular mouthwash. Its daily clean is a dedicated toothbrush and dish soap.
The AAO says a persistent odor is often a sign that bacteria have multiplied unchecked, and that an old or dirty case can harbor bacteria too. It suggests a stronger or more frequent deep clean, such as a retainer-cleaning tablet or a baking soda paste, and an appointment with your orthodontist if odors persist after trying multiple cleaning methods.
