Holiday season 2026: the cleaner guides are fresh

RetainerCareGuide
Our methodRe-checked this quarter

How we pick: from owner reports to a ranked, sourced list

Every list starts with what owners report after weeks of use, then the maker's care instructions and the FDA device class.

6 steps 4 kinds of sources No lab tests
Hands typing on a laptop beside a cup of coffee and an open notebook on a wooden desk
Weeks of daily use, not first impressions

From question to page in six steps

The same for a cleaner, a tablet, a case or a care how-to.

  1. Choose the question

What readers search for and ask about retainer care.

  2. Read the owners

Public reviews after weeks of use. Each quote is filed with its source.

  3. Check the maker's care instructions

Soak times, water temperature, limits and warnings, from the label or page.

  4. Check the FDA device class

How the FDA classes the device type, read in the regulation text.

  5. Rank and write the verdict

Ordered by fit for a use, checked against the sources.

  6. Re-check every quarter

Sooner when a maker changes its directions.

The sources we read for care steps

Each one is named beside the step it supports.

See them in the how-to
AAO care guideDaily and weekly retainer care
KidsHealth (Nemours)Storing and handling a retainer
Makers' directionsSoak times, limits and warnings
FDA regulation textDevice classes, in 21 CFR

Where a source is silent, we say so. The AAO's guide skips vinegar, so we mark it "Ask first".

Makers' care instructions and FDA classes we check

What counts as evidence, and what does not

The filter every report and claim goes through.

What counts

  • Reports from owners after weeks of daily use
  • The same praise or problem from many owners
  • The maker's written directions, limits and warnings
Show all 5Show fewer
  • Regulation text, read at the source
  • Care steps from the AAO and KidsHealth (Nemours)

What does not

  • Unboxing first impressions
  • A single review with no detail
  • A claim with no named source
Show all 4Show fewer
  • A brand's payment, request or free sample

How the ranking works

Who a product suits decides where it sits. Money does not.

How we make money

Fit for a use

The top pick is the one owners' reports best support. Awards name narrower uses.

What a re-check covers

  • Changed specs or warnings
  • New owner problems
  • Gone or renamed products
  • Broken store links

The badge on a guide

Re-checked this quarter

It hides itself when the quarter ends, so no stale date is printed.

Off-limits on every page

Seven things no guide here will do.

  • Give dental advice
  • Say "medically reviewed"
  • Claim a lab test
  • Restate a germ-kill figure
  • Invent owner quotes
  • Sell a ranking
  • Print prices, stars or scores

Questions about how we pick

Do you test the products yourselves?

No. We do not run lab tests. Our guides sum up what owners report after weeks of use and check each product against its maker's specs, directions and warnings.

Is a dentist or orthodontist reviewing the guides?

No. No guide is reviewed by a licensed dental professional, so none says "medically reviewed". Care steps come from the AAO, KidsHealth (Nemours) and the makers' directions, and each one names its source.

Can a brand buy a place or a higher rank?

No. Rankings are never sold. See how we make money.

Why don't you show prices?

Prices change often and differ between stores, so a printed price goes stale. The Check price button opens the store's own page with today's price.

How often are the guides updated?

Every guide is re-checked once a quarter, and sooner when a maker changes its directions or owners report a new problem. The Re-checked this quarter badge shows only while that re-check is current.
